Bitnu's story
‘From despair to dignity’

Bintu, 60, lives in a small village in Sierra Leone with several of her grandchildren. For years, they survived by begging, an unstable and often distressing way to get by.

Through Muslim Aid’s 2024 Ramadan Food Programme, Bintu received essential food supplies that helped her family get through the Holy Month with dignity. Grateful for the support, she shared:

“This is a life-changing opportunity I have benefited from in this Month of Ramadan. My happiness is unending; my spirit of gratitude has grown out in me. May Allah bless you greatly.”

Laylat ul-Qadr, known as the Night of Power or Night of Decree, is one of the most sacred nights in Islam. It is the night on which the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Worship performed on this night is greater in reward than worship over a thousand months, making it a time of immense mercy, forgiveness, and spiritual significance.

The exact date of Laylat ul-Qadr is not known. However, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised seeking it during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd-numbered nights (the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night). For this reason, many Muslims increase their prayers, charity, and remembrance of Allah throughout the final ten nights of Ramadan.
